Quick C.V. for PhysioMonkey
Physio since 1999 and specialising in out-patient work since 2002. I'm registered with the Health Professions Council (necessary to legally work in the UK), and I'm a registered member of the Chartered Society for Physiotherapy. I've been juggling since the mid 1990's but strictly as a hobbyist and convention-goer rather than performer. Since attending conventions I've noticed some odd beliefs about health and fitness amongst jugglers. Having said that it should be noted that, as a group, they (we) tend to be quite interested in health and fitness and are fitter than the average.
To bridge the gap in knowledge I wanted to put something together as a workshop to be debuted at the EJC in 2005. It was all prepared but, as those who attended will know, the weather screwed everything up. The lack of "not packed" indoor space meant that there was nowhere quiet enough (nor with the facilities) to do it. I didn't want to waste the work I did so I've put it on this site. I've used a blog site because it's the easiest (and cheapest) way I know to do it. It also allows for comments and updates depending on what questions you may have or what research comes up.
Some of the information and some views may be controversial and may (or may not) surprise you. If you have queries then feel free to comment and/or ask questions. You should also note that much of what is on here has been simplified somewhat. This is through not wanting to make it so dense and difficult that a layman doesn't get anything from it.
I'm open to comments and to disagreements. I'm even up for abuse but if you can't back up your points with real research (meaning published in peer-reviewed journals) then don't expect me to accede to your views. Something may not be right just because you've always thought it or because more than one person you trust has told you it. But disagree if you wish, I'd rather have debate than quiet aquiescence and acceptance.
Using the site
To read all basic information posts then click on where it says "Information" underneath "Categories" on the left of the screen. Posts will be updated as new research is published so they will not stay the same.
Known points of controversy will also be referenced under "Controversy".
Definition pages will be categorised as "What is?"
You can comment freely using the comments bit under each post. These will be edited as necessary: for instance if people tell me of something that contradicts what I've said and it is borne out after checks then the post will be amended (with acknowledgements for those who pointed the changes out to me).
Copyright
If you believe that something on this site is copyrighted to you (or your clients) or there is something you don't want on for personal reasons (there may be photos from workshops or conventions or taken from other websites) then contact me and it will be removed asap. If I want to use a photo for this site I will inform you of it and ask permission if I know how. At conventions I'll just ask.
My work is free to use but ideally with a reference and/or link to the site. It'd also be nice if I know about it so please send me an email or leave a comment on the site. If you tell me your requirements I may even be able to give you something more suited to the task you want it for. Ask if you have any questions or requests.
Legal disclaimer bit
- All medical and physical problems are individual and will be affected by numerous factors. There is NO WAY that generic advice can be appropriate for everyone and may be counter-productive even to extent of causing harm. There is NEVER a substitute for the advice of your trusted health professional who can assess your individual situation and needs.
- If you follow the advice on this site then you are agreeing with the previous statement!
- And if you must post replies DO NOT post adverts for your products. If you want to bring something to everyone else's attention, bring it to mine first. Then I'll decide what adverts go on my site.
Workshops and advice sessions
If you're organising a convention and are interested in me putting on a workshop or two then I'm amenable if I'm free.
I've done workshops on general injury prevention/first aid and improving control (good for jugglers). These were have been run at the following conventions to good reviews so far - Leeds 2005, ChocFest 11, BJC 2006 and I'm at BJC 2007. I'm also happy to run massage workshops and one-to-one advice and treatment sessions for you (as at BJC 2006 where I was kept busy for 6 hours worth of treatment time) - this last would need a private room.
You can contact me via Email for all queries/requests: advice is free; I'm no spammer.
